In today’s Daily, MLB.com’s Bill Ladson has an update on injured Nationals right-handers Jonathan Papelbon and Stephen Strasburg. As Ladson notes, both pitchers threw on flat ground without any problems.

Strasburg missed his last start against the Dodgers with an upper back strain, and it’s unknown if he’ll be able to make his next start Sunday against the Brewers. Papelbon has been on the disabled list since June 12th with an intercostal strain. According to Ladson, the veteran closer hopes to throw off the mound in Milwaukee.
Also in today’s Daily, the Washington Post’s Chelsea Janes discusses the ripple effects that Papelbon’s stint on the disabled list has had on the Nationals’ bullpen. As Janes writes, the bullpen has been solid for most of the season but has stumbled a bit of late.

Strasburg, Papelbon progressing from injuries
LOS ANGELES — The Nationals received encouraging news as right-handers Jonathan Papelbon and Stephen Strasburg threw on flat ground without any problems.
Manager Dusty Baker found it encouraging that Strasburg was able to throw, but the skipper wouldn’t say if Strasburg will be ready to pitch on Sunday against the Brewers.

Jonathan Papelbon’s absence has ripple effect on Nationals’ bullpen

LOS ANGELES — Nearly halfway through their season, the Washington Nationals remain well above .500 despite this week’s five-game losing streak. They lead the National League East despite limited contributions from some of those expected to provide a great deal but aided by production from those not expected to give them quite so much. Their starting rotation measures up statistically with the best in the majors.
But the question that loomed largest as spring training ended still lingers: How good is the bullpen?
