As Ladson writes, Taylor will serve as a backup outfielder, while Turner gives the team infield depth on the bench. Zimmerman was placed on the disabled list with a a strained left rib cage.
Also in today’s Daily, the Washington Post’s Jorge Castillo discusses Stephen Strasburg not pitching in this year’s All-Star Game. As Castillo writes, Nationals ace Max Scherzer will replace Strasburg on the National League roster.
If Strasburg were to pitch in the game — which is in his home town of San Diego — he would be pitching on three-days’ rest. Since the right-hander recently returned from the disabled list, Strasburg, along with manager Dusty Baker and general manager Mike Rizzo, decided that it would be better for him to not pitch in the game.
Strasburg will still participate in All-Star festivities, according to Castillo.
Here’s what Baker had to say about Strasburg missing the Summer Classic, via Castillo’s article:
"“He’ll be on three days’ rest. It will cost him time again with us,” Baker said. “I’m just glad he’s going, especially in his hometown, but there’s a lot at risk with Stephen because he just came off the DL. You don’t know how he’s going to come through this game tonight. Everyone just thought it would be better if he didn’t start or pitch.”"
Be sure to check out both articles below, they’re definitely worth a read. And as always, stay tuned to DoD for all your Washington Nationals needs.
Trea called up as Nationals place Zim on DL
NEW YORK — A day after being short on the bench against the Mets, the Nationals placed first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list Friday, retroactive to Thursday, because of a strained left rib cage and optioned right-hander Lucas Giolito to Triple-A Syracuse.
The team recalled outfielder Michael Taylor and infielder/outfielder Trea Turner from Syracuse. Those two players will come off the bench. For Taylor, he will be the backup outfielder, while Turner will see most of his time in the infield. Read full article here.

Earlier this week, Stephen Strasburg was named to the National League all-star team and spoke of how special the honor was for him because the game will be played in his hometown of San Diego. Strasburg, however, will not pitch in the game, Major League Baseball announced Friday afternoon. His general manager, Mike Rizzo, and manager, Dusty Baker, said that while they had input, the decision ultimately came down to Strasburg, and was mostly because of the back injury from which he returned last week.

“All I know is that, kind of no matter what the group says, it boils down to your decision, kind of,” Baker said. “The group can have some input, but basically, how do you tell a grown man he can’t pitch in the all-star game? It’s probably a combination of [his decision and ours].” Read full article here.
