Washington Nationals: Ward/Brinley Compete In AFL Stars Game

This past week, two Washington Nationals prospects competed in the Arizona Fall League Stars Game for Team West

The Washington Nationals group of prospects in the Arizona Fall League went 4-1 in five games for the Glendale Desert Dogs (10-12 record in the AFL). The schedule was cut short this past week because of the AFL Fall Stars Game that took place Saturday night on MLB Network.

Two Washington Nationals prospects (Drew Ward and Ryan Brinley) were selected to compete for Team West, which ended up winning the game by a final score of 12-4. Ward was the starting third baseman and went 1-for-5 with a run scored while Brinley pitched to two batters in the ninth and gave up one run on one hit.

Ward played in three games last week and went 2-for-13 with a double. His AFL hit streak came to an end on November 3 against Scottsdale. However, he is still tied for fourth in the league in hits (18) and is hitting .327 in 14 games. His .327 batting average is tied for the team lead with another Washington Nationals prospect, Andrew Stevenson.

Stevenson, who has recorded a hit in each of his last eight games, went 5-for-15 in four games The 22-year-old has five stolen bases in AFL play, which is tied with Ramon Laureano for the team lead. In his last ten games, he has four multi-hit games. As for shortstop Osvaldo Abreu, he went 2-for-11 in three games with the two hits coming in the November 3 game against Scottsdale.

Austin Voth had what might be his best performance so far in that November 3 game. He threw five shutout innings, gave up three hits, struck out two, and walked two on 65 pitches in the win. While he only threw 37 strikes out of those 65 pitches, the right-hander only gave up one extra-base hit.

Besides the AFL Stars game, Brinley made one appearance this past week (November 1). He went 1.2 innings, gave up one run on two hits, and struck out one. Jake Johansen went just 1/3 of an inning on November 3 and Nick Lee walked three batters and gave up one unearned run in 1.1 innings on November 1.

After two days off, the Desert Dogs will go for their fifth straight win this afternoon against the Peoria Javelinas. First pitch will be at 3:35 p.m ET. With only two weeks left in the Fall League season, it will be interesting to see how the Washington Nationals prospects play these final two weeks.
