Washington Nationals: Baseball America Reveals Top 10 Nats Prospects

This morning, Baseball America revealed their list of the top ten Washington Nationals prospects

Since last Wednesday, the Washington Nationals farm system looks a lot different now that pitchers Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, and Dane Dunning are in the White Sox organization. This morning, Baseball America unveiled their new list of the top ten prospects in the Nats farm system, which was put together by Teddy Cahill.

Of course, there is no surprise that outfielder Victor Robles is the prospect right now. The 19-year-old was almost dealt for White Sox ace Chris Sale, but he remains the best position prospect because of his speed. He was 37-for-51 in stolen bases in 2016 at three levels (Gulf Coast League, low-A, and high-A).

With Giolito and Lopez now out of the system, the honor of the best pitching prospect goes to right-hander Erick Fedde. The 23-year-old ended his season making five starts at double-A Harrisburg. Before being promoted, he went 6-4 with a 2.85 ERA in 17 starts at high-A Potomac and had 95 strikeouts to 19 walks at 91.2 innings.

The prospects that made the biggest rise up their rankings this year from last year’s top ten were center fielder Andrew Stevenson going up from eighth to fifth and infielder Wilmer Difo going from eighth to fourth.

Some of the newcomers on this year’s top ten were 2016 draft pick Carter Kieboom and Juan Soto. Kieboom (eighth on the list) played 36 games at shortstop in the GCL and hit .244 with four home runs, 25 RBI’s, and had a .353 on-base percentage. Soto (third on the list) won GCL MVP this past season and the 18-year-old hit .361 with five home runs and 31 RBI’s while having an on-base percentage of .410.

Another newcomer onto their list is shortstop Luis Garcia, who signed with the Washington Nationals as an international free agent back in July. At just 16 years old, Garcia could be a name to watch in the Nats system going forward.

With Trea Turner, Giolito, Lopez, and Dunning off of this new top ten list, the farm system isn’t as strong as it once was. However, there are a lot of players like Kieboom, Soto, and Gatcia who are not at the upper levels of the system that can change that ranking further down the road.

All in all, the star of this list is Robles, who has the chance to be the Washington Nationals starting left fielder for many years to come.
