After getting off to a slow start to the 2017 season, Washington Nationals third baseman, Anthony Rendon had an offensive explosion this week, leading to him being named District on Deck’s player of the week.

Washington Nationals third baseman, Anthony Rendon had a phenomenal 2016 season, leading to him winning the National League Comeback Player of the Year award. After suffering a calf injury during Spring Training, he missed Opening Day and got off to a sluggish start in 2017.

He did a lot more than just break out of his slump this week, leading the way for this historic Nats lineup.

More from District on Deck

Rendon began the week with one of the best offensive performances in MLB history. On Sunday, he went 6-for-6 with three homers and ten RBI’s, becoming the first player since at least 1913 to accomplish this feat. He also set a Nationals franchise record with 10 RBI’s, and was just the 13th player in MLB history to record 10 RBI’s in a single game.

He even had more RBI’s than the Mets had hits on Sunday. He had quite the day at the plate, and it will most likely go down as one of the best games of his career.

Rendon has not looked back after breaking out of his slump, only failing to get a hit in one game all week. He only had two extra base hits entering this week, but the man that Nats fans affectionately call “Tony Two Bags” appears to be back and better than ever. He recorded three doubles this week, and may have had even more if so many of his hits weren’t clearing the fence.

He had another exceptional game on May 5 when he went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI’s. This was also the first of two consecutive games with a homer for Rendon.

By the end of the week, Rendon led the team in most offensive statistical categories  despite the fact that Ryan Zimmerman has been playing out of his mind. In six games, he led the team in homers (five), RBI’s (17), batting average (.522), on-base percentage (.577), slugging percentage (1.304), on-base plus slugging (1.881), total bases (30), and extra base hits (eight).

Rendon set the tone for this week with a historic performance and never looked back. After getting off to a slow start, he finally got going this week, providing lots of offensive production and gold glove-caliber defense at the hot corner. Rendon’s resurgence is much needed, especially after losing Adam Eaton for the season. He had a tremendous week and looks to be back and better than ever, which is a great sight for Nats fans. It should be a lot of fun to watch him produce in the middle of this potent lineup and impress with excellent defense at third base.
