With the 2026 season winding down to a close for the Washington Nationals, we are almost entering a time of reflection. There have been a lot of ups and also a lot of downs for the club over the course of the year so far, which is typical for any team in sports. But what would be great to see for the organization to round out the season?
1) CJ Abrams: 30+ home runs, 110+ RBI, and 30+ stolen bases
Nationals' shortstop CJ Abrams, who was voted in by fans to start in the All-Star Game in Philadelphia this year, has been on a roll. As of writing this article, he has hit 29 homers, drove in 94 runs, and had driven in 94 runs, and stolen 27 bases (being caught five times). Abrams has been a key part of the Nationals' few successes this year, especially being a starter in the All-Star Game.
With the Nats being far out of the postseason picture, in the last full month of the season, I think the idea that CJ Abrams can get at least one more homer, 16 runs driven in, and three more stolen bases is perfectly realistic. I think his success so far this season, and for the rest of the season, would give the Nationals organization and fans high hopes for the team's future.
2) 75+ team wins
The Nationals have exceeded expectations this season, at least in my view. The Nationals, who have few superstars compared to the New York Mets, who have a mega payroll of $342.9 million, c are playing better baseball than their division rivals to the north. The Nationals have a payroll of only $98.6 million, showing that money doesn't always lead to winning baseball teams.
The Mets, despite having one of the best rosters in terms of hitters, will miss the postseason for the second straight season. I think that any season the Nats can finish with a better record than a team that has much more star power is something to be proud of, and if the Nats win 75+ games, of which they are eight wins away, it gives the team momentum to build up for the team's future successes.
3) James Wood returns and excels
James Wood is currently on the 10-day injured list after having a pretty hot start to his season and being an All-Star. With him set to return from the Injured List today, seeing him finish off the season on a high note would be massive for not only his confidence, but for the organization's as well.
Seeing our team's superstar out there to finish off the season will be a great morale boost not only for James, but also the fans. James Wood being on the field would be key to the Nationals reaching 75 wins, a goal I'd love to see for this team.
