The 2026 season is coming to an end for the Washington Nationals over this weekend. With just 3 games remaining for the club, the Nationals are eager to stack as many wins as possible, as they have already achieved the 75-win total tht once seemed completely unimaginable. Across the organization, the franchise has continued to stack wins elsewhere.
Being selected first overall in any sport is a huge deal. You have high expectations to perform; however, in baseball it's a little different. Other sports leagues in the US don't have a minor league system as big as baseball's, if they have one at all. When you are selected first overall as Eli Willits was, you have super high expectations.
Eli Willits named Nationals' MiLB Player of the Year by Baseball America
Even they'll usually have to spend some time in the minor leagues. Sometimes a player is an extreme flop in the minors or after getting called up. Eli Willits, who has been hot all season, doesn't look like he'll be a flop anytime soon, if at all. Currently ranked as the Nationals' No. 1 prospect by MLB Pipeline and No. 4 in all of the minors, he is a player to be excited about for the team's future. In addition, Baseball America just named Eli Willits the Nationals' minor league player of the year.
Across three levels of minor league baseball this year- Low-A, A+, and AA- Eli Willits has been absolutely incredible as he has worked his way through the Nationals' pipeline. Between the three levels, his slash line is .265/.406/.463 with 14 home runs, 27 doubles, and eight triples, driving in 75 runs and showing impeccable speed by stealing 63 bags.
Eli Willits still has a long way to go before reaching the majors. According to MLB Pipeline, his MLB ETA is during the 2028 season; however, it is possible to see him improve a lot next season and get called up next year.
I'm very excited about the future of the Washington Nationals. With Eli Willits climbing the minor league ranks and Chris Hacopian coming up too, combined with James Wood and CJ Abrams, if they are still around when the big-time prospects get called up, the Nationals can very well become a lethal team that will make postseason runs for years to come.
At just 18 years old, after being drafted at 17, Eli has such high expectations for someone his age, and he has handled that pressure to perform at a high level so well, and I know if he keeps it up, he can be one of the greatest Nationals prospects of all time, comparable to Bryce Harper or Juan Soto.
Willits will be a huge reason why the Nationals perform well each season once called up, if the team reaches the postseason, and I can't waIt to see it all unfold.
