The offseason is in full swing for the Washington Nationals, as the team is doing the same thing that 26 other MLB teams are doing: sitting on the couch at home. Fortunately for the Nationals, the team can hold their heads high after an impressive 2026 season that saw them majorly exceed expectations.

Not every other team can say the same, as a lot of the teams that went home after the Nationals went home in embarrassing fashion due to their team not meeting postseason expectations that were set for them. On the same grain of exceeding expectations, the Nationals have a player up for an award that was likely once thought of as completely unexpected coming into this season.

After an impressive rookie season at the plate that even culminated in Daylen Lile being named as the National League Player of the Month in 2025, he had one specific goal in mind heading into the offseason. Lile wanted to improve defensively, as he was one of the worst defensive outfielders in all of baseball during his debut season.

He worked hard at improving his defense during the offseason, and Paul Toboni even told him shortly after he took the job that Lile was too good of an athlete to be that poor in the field. While I'm obviously paraphrasing a little bit there, the message was clear to Lile that he had to make significant strides, and he did a great job on that front.

While still being great at the plate, Lile finished the 2026 season in the field with 2 Outs Above Average (OAA), and 8 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS), both of which were drastically above last season's numbers. In 2025, Lile had -8 OAA and -14 DRS, and the +22 improvement in DRS is one of the largest jumps in baseball over the last two seasons, as pointed out by the Nationals Communications team in their press release.

As a result, Lile was named as one of three finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove award in left field earlier today, and he will be going up against Jackson Chourio of the Milwaukee Brewers and Ian Happ of the Chicago Cubs. The competition is stiff at the position, but it is still nice for Lile to be rewarded with being a finalist after his dramatic improvement.

Lile will find out if he is a recipient of his first career Gold Glove on Sunday, November 1st, shortly after the conclusion of this year's World Series.
