Former longtime National becomes instant legend for new club in team debut

The Washington Nationals are going through it right now. After a brutal final week before the trade deadline in which the team managed just 1 win out of 7 games, the Nationals unfortunately continued their losing ways on Monday night. Now sitting 5.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot, it appears as if the Nationals are likely to be out of the picture sooner rather than later.

While this season ended up exceeding expectations really no matter how you spin it, obviously with the trade deadline now in the rearview mirror, the team is likely to fall off a bit after losing a few key pieces. The Nationals did gain back some valuable pieces including Connelly Early, but we will still have to wait to see him debut. However, one former National made his impact felt in his debut for his new club on Monday night.

Luis Garcia Jr. already a Yankees legend after homering in team debut

If there has ever been anyone who is good at making first impressions, you would have to think that Luis Garcia Jr. is near the top of the list. Outside of his contagious joy and smile that he plays the game with every day, obviously, Garcia Jr. has taken major steps forward from an actual baseball standpoint. His breakout this season has resulted in him finding a new home as a coveted trade piece with the New York Yankees, and he absolutely nailed his first impression for his new club.

Batting third and starting at first base wearing pinstripes for the first time, Garcia Jr. had already recorded a base knock when he stepped into the batter's box in the bottom of the 7th inning with the Yankees trailing 6-5 to the St. Louis Cardinals. He then deposited a 2-run homer to right field to give the Yankees a 7-5 lead, and send the crowd at Yankees Stadium into a frenzy.

The homer travelled 424 feet, and left the bat at 109 MPH, giving the Yankees a lead and Garcia Jr. an early signature moment for his new club. Unfortunately for the Yankees, they would end up dropping the game 13-7 in large part due to Alec Burleson's 3 home runs, but nonetheless, Garcia Jr. is off and running with his new club while his old one continues to sputter.

Watching the video back, it was bittersweet to see Garcia Jr. already have a big moment like this, as he was even still wearing his red belt he wore during his tenure with the Nationals, which perhaps made it sting a little bit more. The Nationals will wait for the arms they got back in the deal to debut for the club, which could come as early as tonight as the team lloks to snap out of their major funk.
