The Washington Nationals will go for a sweep today in Cincinnati against the Reds after winning in a dramatic extra innings game last night. Daylen Lile had his finest moment of the young season so far, continuing his recent power surge in front of his family.
Down on the farm, a Nationals prospect from the MacKenzie Gore trade continued to surge towards the Top 100 list after hitting a grand slam last night in Devin Fitz-Gerald. With all the prospects from the trade having decent time under their belts at this point, how have they all fared? Let's check in.
RHP Alejandro Rosario (WSH #16)
The first name we will check in on is righty Alejandro Rosario. Unfortunately for the Nationals, who have not gotten to see him pitch yet, they will have to wait a little bit longer, as he underwent Tommy John Surgery after being acquired. At this point, the upside is still tremendous with him, but the fact he hasn't pitched since 2024 is slightly concerning. He is firmly in the wait-and-see category.
1B Abimelec Ortiz (WSH #25)
Abimelec Ortiz had a very solid chance to be the first baseman of the future coming into spring training, but he simply did not go out and take the job like many of us wanted him to. He has taken a little bit of time warming up down with AAA Rochester, but he has performed decently overall.
He has a .241/.369/.407 slash line through 32 games, good for a .776 OPS to go along with 3 homers and 22 RBIs. Additionally, he has a 17:22 BB:K ratio, showcasing a solid approach. After hitting 25 homers last season, we are still waiting for the power to translate a little bit to the Nationals' organization, but he should get a look in the big leagues later this year.
Devin Fitz-Gerald (WSH #9)
Perhaps the crown jewel of the trade return so far has been Devin Fitz-Gerald, who is on an all-time heater right now for High-A Wilmington. I won't get into a ton of detail since I wrote about him extensively yesterday as someone who is trending towards being a Top 100 prospect, and his recent hot streak has done nothing but help that narrative.
Gavin Fien (WSH #6)
The youngest player in the return, Gavin Fien has only been able to appear in 5 games in the Nationals organization due to a wrist injury he has been battling. He made his return to the Low-A Fredericksburg lineup last night, and went 1/2 with a walk and a stolen base.
His slash line is not pretty at just .158/.273/.211 with a .484 OPS, but through just 19 at-bats it's obviously way too early to make any judgements. He did also just fall out of the Top 100 list yesterday in the updated rankings, but a little bit of flash will get him right back in it.
Yeremy Cabrera (WSH #21)
Maybe the biggest surprise of the trade so far has been Yeremy Cabrera, who actually earned a promotion earlier this week. He got off to a scorching start for Low-A Fredericksburg, and has since been moved up to High-A Wilmington.
He slashed .333/.465/.649 with an absurd 1.114 OPS in 30 games for the FredNats, and hit 7 homers to go with 22 RBIs and 18 stolen bases, showcasing a true 5-tool skillset that could make him a huge riser if he continues the success past Fredericksburg. His 28:35 BB:K ratio showcases a mature approach as well, something the new front office has coveted.
Which prospect are you most excited to see in the big leagues? As always, please let me know on X, @DCBerk.
