Normally on this site, I tend to stay away from postgame recaps, as they typically aren't the best from a readership standpoint. That little tidbit I just provided was a little bit of honesty from me, something that Nationals Manager Dave Martinez chose not to show in his postgame presser on Tuesday afternoon.
The Washington Nationals have now lost an embarrassing 10 straight games, including the first 2 of a 4 game set with the Colorado Rockies. Things just keep going from bad to worse, and on Tuesday, it just kept getting worse. Don't let the final score fool you, this was not a close game by any means.
But you would never know it if you listened to Martinez and his typical cliche answers after the game. When asked if he heard the boos from the home fans as the Rockies circled the bases 7 times on home runs, Martinez replied that he did not hear them, and then tried to focus on some of the positives from the game including how well Brady House hit the baseball today, which he did, to his credit.
The boos were loud enough from the home crowd that they were able to be heard on the broadcast for fans back home, who may have been booing from their couches. There were also numerous chants of "Fire Davey" in some of the upper levels of the stadium, according to multiple sources, and some fans even wore paper bags on their heads urging Mark Lerner to finally sell the team.
This is what rock bottom feels like.
Getting your doors blown off by a team that has been on pace to be the worst team in MLB history this year in the Rockies, but you never would have known it if today was your first time watching baseball. Important to note, the Rockies have just 16 wins this season, with 3 of them coming against the Nationals. Hunter Goodman looks more and more deserving of the starting catcher spot in the National League, and he probably wishes he could play the Nationals every game, considering he now has 3 homers in this series alone.
As for any small positives from the game from the Nationals perspective, there were a few notable ones. Brady House recorded his first 2 big league knocks, and even drove in his first runner as well. His patience so far through 7 plate appearances has been very encouraging, having already drawn 2 walks and not looking overly eager to chase out of the zone, which had been an issue of his down in the minors.

Nathaniel Lowe and Luis Garcia Jr. both homered, and Michael Soroka recorded a quality start despite taking a loss today, as he struggled with his command at times. He did fan 9 Rockies hitters on the day, but also hit 3 batters and left the game with his team trailing 3-1, as he did not receive much offense. I know, shocking, right?
Outside of that, everything else was pretty much awful for the Nationals, who lost despite recording 12 hits. It is important to note that they trailed the game 10-2 heading into the 9th inning, and reeled off another one of their signature "fake comebacks" that have become a staple of the 2025 team. This team is not fighting despite what Martinez continues to say, but can you really blame the players after their manager ripped them all publicly just a few days ago?
This team and organization is an absolute mess right now from top to bottom, and I really hope they can get this figured out soon. Someone needs to lose their job, whether it be hitting coach Darnell Coles, Martinez, General Manager Mike Rizzo, or someone in the front office, but this can't go on for much longer.
The Nationals will look to right the ship on Wednesday afternoon, as they will send lefty Mitchell Parker, (4-7, 4.84 ERA) to the bump against righty German Márquez for Colorado, (2-8, 6.62 ERA). If the Nationals can't win tomorrow after struggling against a pair of Rockies starters who both came into the game with an ERA that started with a 7, the boos, chants for someone to be fired, and open displays of frustration with ownership will only continue.
At the end of the day, just remember, "it's never on coaching."
Will the Nationals ever win another game? As always, please let me know on X, @DCBerk.
