The 2026 Washington Nationals accomplished such a unique feat that it's almost hard to believe when you read it. The team has been known for making a youthful shift. They are aiming to win through their farm system and breed champions, not buy them. That becomes increasingly clear when you hear what Paul Toboni said in a letter earlier this week.
"100% of team hits this season came from players under the age of 30," Toboni explained in a published letter to the fans. He confirmed it was the second time in MLB history this feat has been accomplished. "That speaks to the youth of our roster and the opportunity in front of us. It also motivates us to keep turning that potential into production," Toboni continues.
The Nationals Through the Numbers
The Nationals underwent an organizational change prior to 2026. It brought in key Tampa Bay Rays personnel, including manager Blake Butera, to begin a new organizational strategy. They would develop their youth rather than sign a bunch of one-and-done prospects for short-term mediocrity.
The strategy worked. As Toboni explained, the Nationals improved their run differential from -212 to +6 year over year. The Nationals ranked top-7 in the following metrics:
- Hits
- Doubles
- Triples
- Home Runs
- RBI's
- Stolen Bases*
- Slugging Percentage
- OPS
*Ranked Best in the MLB
The improvement was drastic, and on the heels of three players that are Silver Slugger Finalists.
The Silver Slugger Award is voted on by MLB Managers and coaches to determine the best hitter at each position in their respective league.
The Nationals have two finalists: CJ Abrams (SS) and James Wood (OF), aged 26 and 24, respectively. The Nationals are also one of four finalists for the NL Offensive Team of the Year.
However, the team's offensive success doesn't have to rest on two players. It was a team effort, and other organizations around baseball are noticing.
The Yankees traded for 26-year-old Luis Garcia Jr. during the summer. But his season the prior year had made a great return on investment.
In 104 games as a National this past season, Garcia recorded a +14.5 Fangraphs Offensive Rating and 133 wRC+. The trade flipped Garcia for two prospects ranked top-20 in the organization, which is a great return.
26-year-old Curtis Mead also improved his slugging percentage by .177 points and his offensive rating by 19.1 points. Andres Chaparro also emerged as a breakout, improving his slugging percentage by .267 points and his offensive rating by 16.0 points.
If the Nationals can develop excellence from players who weren't on the radar before Opening Day, I can only imagine what they might do in 2027...
The Nationals' No. 3 and No. 4 prospects are due up in 2027. In fact, they may both earn spots on the Opening Day roster. They are infielder Seaver King and pitcher Jarlin Susana.
