The Washington Nationals are in the middle of a slump right now. Coming into the last week and a half or so, they had an opportunity to fully cement themselves as contenders, but they have fallen massively short. After losing 2 out of 3 to the Toronto Blue Jays, all 4 games to the Atlanta Braves, and now the first 2 games to the Philadelphia Phillies, they are now 5.5 games back of the final NL Wild Card spot.
Many fans were upset at the team trading away pieces at the trade deadline, but with the way the team performed, it is getting more and more difficult to argue against the choices of the front office. After trading away Curtis Mead for Connelly Early and Luis Garcia Jr. for a handful of arms, the Nationals' top offense in baseball suffered another loss as James Wood hit the Injured List on Tuesday, clearing the way for a newcomer to the Nationals' roster.
Andrew Pinckney selected by Nationals as James Wood hits Injured List
James Wood went down after Monday night's game with an oblique strain, and has since been placed on the 10-day Injured List. Fortunately, it appears as if Wood has avoided serious injury, as Blake Butera stated optimism that Wood's stint would be a minimum one. Hopefully, the Nationals can weather the storm in his absence, but the team was shut out last night in their first game without him.
Obviously, nobody can replace Wood's production in the lineup, but if there is any type of silver lining to all of the recent string of bad news, it's that outfielder Andrew Pinckney will now get an opportunity to make his MLB debut. While we do not yet know when that will be, the premise of even being on the roster is a fun one for Pinckney, who was a 4th-rounder back in 2023 out of Alabama.
Pinckney has spent time ranked on the Nationals' Top 30 prospect lists over the last couple years, but has fallen off due to the increased depth in the team's system. He profiles as a true power-speed threat with a solid glove in the outfield, but he might strike out a bit too much to stick as an everyday player.
The 25-year-old outfielder is graded by MLB Pipeline as possessing 80 grade speed, 50 grade power, and 55 grade arm/fielding, but his large drawback is his 35 grade contact, which limits his ceiling. He has slashed .271/.345/.425 for a .770 OPS in 94 games for AAA Rochester but has also struck out 120 times in 382 plate appearances, walking just 37 times in comparison. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how he fares once given an opportunity, which he should hopefully get a chance to earn over the next couple weeks.
