The Washington Nationals have had an inconsistent season to say the least. Just over a month ago, the team was on the verge of playoff contention, and had hung around in the National League Wild Card chase for much longer than anyone could have anticipated coming into the season. While many will blame the team trading away big pieces at the deadline, the decline had already begun before then.
After the deadline, the team had lost big pieces such as Foster Griffin, Curtis Mead, and Luis Garcia Jr., the latter being the longest-tenured player in the organization as well. That trade for Garcia Jr. also stood out due to the fact that the team received a plethora of pitchers, which was the same strategy they used for the Griffin trade as well.
The Nationals were thrilled to improve their pitching, obviously in large part due to their horrendous bullpen performance from the first half of the season. One of the arms they got back, Yovanny Cruz, is actually headed back up to the Nationals after some uneven initial outings with the team, although the circumstances in which he got the call-up are not ideal.
Nationals lose Orlando Ribalta to 15-day Injured List; Cruz recalled
That circumstance was because righty Orlando Ribalta, who has been one of the best arms in the back of the bullpen this year for manager Blake Butera to count on, has gone down with an injury. Making things worse is the nature of the injury, which is some inflammation in his right forearm. Butera sounded concerned in yesterday's postgame, and the fact he went straight to the IL is a bit of a reason for worry.
We never want to speculate on injuries without having any sort of medical information, but often times forearm inflammation can be a precursor to more of a long-term injury that can keep guys out for much longer. Hopefully, Ribalta can avoid any serious sort of stint on the IL, but at this point, it seems more likely that his 2026 will come to an end on a sour note.
The year coming to an end like this for Ribalta is a tough pill to swallow, as the 28-year-old has been a consistent presence, with a 3.77 ERA and 1.209 WHIP across 43.0 innings. He has appeared in 45 games for the Nationals, and has pretty consistently been one of the late-inning options for Butera this year, even notching 2 saves. Cruz will now occupy the vacancy left by Ribalta, and hopefully can show some promise of his own in Ribalta's absence.
