The Washington Nationals have been on an absolute roll recently. Despite a home series sweep at the hands of the Miami Marlins, the team overall has been trending in a positive direction, especially coming off a month of May in which they massively overperformed expectations.
Perhaps the best part of the Nationals' success as an organization has been to watch the development of a lot of their youngsters, with guys like Eli Willits and Devin Fitz-Gerald recently earning promotions to move up a level, among others. As good as the team has played this year, the future remains extremely bright, and the Nationals are looking destined for further progress as a franchise.
Seaver King joins MLB Pipeline Top 100 Prospects list
But while the recent promotions of Willits, Fitz-Gerald, Ethan Petry, Jack Moroknek, TJ White, and Jacob Walsh as well stole the headlines from the weekend, an underrated part of the team's farm system was the entrance of 2024 1st-rounder Seaver King into the Top 100 Prospects list on MLB Pipeline. With the graduation of Bryce Eldridge, who the Nationals are playing against right now, King is now the 99th prospect on the list.
Perhaps even more significant is that King is now the Nationals' 6th player on the Top 100 list, and the team has also had a couple other guys in Gavin Fien and Harry Ford both ranked on the list this season as well. The Nationals' 6 players on the list is the most they have had in quite some time, and they have the 3rd most of any team in the league behind the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers, who both have 7 players.
King's entrance is more than warranted, as he was recently promoted to AAA Rochester after tearing up competition at AA Harrisburg. So far through 17 games for the Red Wings, King owns a .268/312/.465 slash line, good for a .777 OPS to go along with 3 homers and 15 RBIs. With him just getting his feet wet at the level it is encouraging to see him not being overmatched early on.
However, he has only walked 3 times compared to 19 strikeouts, which has caused his strikeout rate to jump from 18.79% to 24.68%, albeit a much smaller sample size so far. His 22:31 BB:K ratio at AA was much more indicative of a mature approach, but perhaps his increased chase rate is due to him pressing and wanting to make an impact.
No matter what, that can be ironed out, and there still is a very good chance that King ends up making his debut for the Nationals later this season. While we wait to see what happens with CJ Abrams at the trade deadline, perhaps King unseats Nasim Nuñez at second base before late summer if he can show more of that same approach we saw while he was a level lower.
What do you think of Seaver King finally joining MLB Pipeline's Top 100 Prospects list? As always, please let me know on X, @DCBerk.
