As the season begins to wind down for the Washington Nationals in 2026, there is a lot to look back on favorably. While the recent road trip the team endured in which they went 1-8 certainly put a damper on things, we can't forget how bleak things were supposed to be before this season actually began.
The Nationals were not projected to be a good team by any means, and there were certainly a lot more question marks than answers for the young ball club under their new leadership. Given that the team was still playing meaningful baseball into the month of August, it was a refreshing breath of fresh air for a fanbase that had admittedly seen things become very stale under the guise of their previous leadership.
Part of what has the organization headed in such a positive direction overall is the improvement within the team's farm system. Guys have shown drastic improvements at all levels of the organization, but most specifically at the AAA level, where the Rochester Red Wings have a 75-48 record heading into action this week. Lots of that has been sparked by guys like Seaver King and Luis Perales, who both could be called up in September. But what about another former prospect?
Trey Lipscomb pushing for September call-up with strong August stats
That former prospect would be none other than Trey Lipscomb, who once upon a time was a Top 30 prospect in the organization who fans were begging to get more of an opportunity. After getting a look back in 2024 and posted a disappointing .200/.268/.232 slash line, good for just a .500 OPS, and only had 4 extra base hits in 211 plate appearances.
His brief sample was unimpressive, and he was only given a small opportunity last year by appearing in 3 games for the Nationals but got a pair of hits in just 4 at-bats. But like so many others in the organization this year, Lipscomb has found his power swing for Rochester this year, and his overall numbers have been incredible, especially in the month of August.
Lipscomb enters action on Tuesday night currently slashing .361/.365/.691 in the month of August, good for a 1.056 OPS to go along with 9 homers and 24 RBIs. Overall in 110 games for the Red Wings, Lipscomb has a .298/.333/.554 slash line with an .887 OPS to go along with 27 homers and 80 RBIs, and has even chipped in 11 stolen bases in 13 attempts.

While his plate approach that features minimal walks will likely always limit his ceiling, perhaps he can be coached up at the big league level to be a little bit more patient. Regardless, a guy with an OPS near .900 with almost 30 homers at the highest level of the minors is more than deserving of an opportunity to prove himself again, especially considering Lipscomb is still just 26-years-old and could be abit of a late bloomer in the power department.
At the very least with Lipscomb, he would be a more exciting watch than seeing guys like Jorbit Vivas, Nasim Nunez, and Jose Tena continue to eat up everyday at-bats, which have become tough to watch every day. Given the precedent that has been set by Toboni to reward top performers, the door is certainly open for Lipscomb to get another opportunity in the majors.
