This Nationals' offseason signing shined bright in the World Baseball Classic

Could this guy end up making the Nationals' roster out of camp after a strong WBC showing?

Matt Mervis, a native of Potomac, Maryland, helped Team Israel exceed expectations in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Mervis, an offseason signee of the Washington Nationals, has some history of being a power hitter. While he didn't show up with much power in the World Baseball Classic, he helped provide Israel with much-needed run support. driving in three runs on three hits in 11 at-bats.

Matt Mervis is someone who I would absolutely love to see with the Nationals at the big league level because of his ability to create runs, be a consistent hitter, and has the potential, if given enough plate appearances, to hit 20+ home runs for the Nationals--his nickname is "Mash" for a reason. Across parts of five minor league seasons, Mervis crushed 101 home runs, however, in parts of three major league seasons, he has only hit 10 homers. I am a believer in Matt; he has proven to be a consistent hitter when given enough playing time, but he faces an uphill battle.

Mervis has been moved between the minors and majors frequently, so his potential is in question by many. But Mervis, while playing for Team Israel, has shown that his demeanor, baseball IQ, and ability to get on base are very important to winning games. Matt Mervis is a huge reason why Team Israel went 2-2 in their pool, when I only expected them to beat Team Nicaragua--but alas, they also beat Team Netherlands last night 6-2, where Matt Mervis drove in two runs on two doubles.

Matt Mervis is a player that I am still super high on, despite others being questionable because of his past struggles in the majors. If he is allowed to be an everyday player for a period of one to two weeks at first and he does well, I think opinions of him will change.

Last season, he was in the Miami Marlins' system and started the season on the big-league club. He absolutely raked to start the season, but unfortunately slowed down and was demoted.

Mervis has the ability and build to be a serious power hitter at the big league level, and it might take giving him some chances to play every day for that to happen. The Nationals are not at a win-now moment in their franchise; they are adjusting to new management and still rebuilding, so why not let Mervis play? I think he can be a dark-horse player for the team, even if he needs to prove himself in the minor leagues at first. I truly believe Matt will spend significant time at the big league club, playing for his hometown team.
