Yes, Cole pitches like an average fifth starter. Probably because he is one. Withstanding challenges from Edwin Jackson, Erick Fedde and Tommy Milone, now Cole must relax and show you why he deserves the role.
The same stands for the bullpen trio of Shawn Kelley, Joaquin Benoit and Enny Romero.
Although they can cause sweaty palms and shortness of breath occasionally, getting their confidence ready for the long battle ahead is important. Martinez has stated he will rest his “Law Firm” trio of Sean Doolittle, Brandon Kintzler and Ryan Madson when possible.
The reserve bullpen can pitch well in high-leverage situations if needed. But, a solid close to the Grapefruit League goes a long way in establishing a solid relationship between the trio and Martinez. Establishing trust can lead to less pressure on the rotation to pitch tired. A win-win for everybody.
Can we put in a good word for Sammy Solis too? He has pitched well with great movement.
