The Washington Nationals failed to get back over the .500 mark on Thursday afternoon with their close loss to the New York Mets, but that still does not take away from how brilliant the team has been so far this season. As an organization, things have been trending upwards in a huge way, and a lot of prospects have been on a huge upswing.
Guys like Ronny Cruz have seen gigantic leaps with their standing in prospect lists across the industry, as have guys like Seaver King, a former 1st-rounder in the process of changing the narrative of his career. Both of those guys have earned promotions to new levels, and perhaps the Nationals' farm could have more upward movement soon.
That player, who many thought would take King's place with AA Harrisburg after his promotion, was infielder Devin Fitz-Gerald, who has absolutely dominated the competition he has faced so far with High-A Wilmington. As a result, Fitz-Gerald is now finally part of MLB Pipeline's Top 100 Prospects list, sneaking in at the final spot after being speculated as an addition not too long ago.
As the rankings continue to be updated, there is a good chance that he continues to climb if he keeps raking the way he has, and at this point, there might not be any prospect in the organization that has more helium than the Nationals' 20-year-old infielder. After being tested early at Wilmington, being given the assignment from the jump due to a crowded situation at Low-A Fredericksburg, he has begun to dominate, and should soon be up to AA Harrisburg.
So far this season, Fitz-Gerald owns a .308/.423/.644 slash line in 176 plate appearances for the Blue Rocks, good for a 1.067 OPS. He has also now hit 11 home runs and driven in 33 runners, while also adding 11 stolen bases to go along with a 25:29 BB:K ratio.
With his his entry into the Top 100 list on Pipeline, the Nationals now have 5 prospects on the prestigious list, and have also had Harry Ford and Gavin Fien ranked as recently as a couple weeks ago, giving the Nationals a total of 7 prospects that are hovering around the Top 100 prospects list. That number even jumps to 8 with Seaver King on the doorstep of the majors now, as his prospect status is back on the upswing.
What do you think of Devin Fitz-Gerald finally getting the recognition of landing on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 list? As always, please let me know on X, @DCBerk.
