Year after year, especially recently, it has been the same ordeal at Major League Baseball's trade deadline. We see the Nationals trade away key contributors because the team is not in a position for a postseason spot. But what about the future? You can't just depend on prospects all the time, who will most likely be traded away at some point after being a key contributor at the big-league level.
Nationals sell at trade deadline again despite strong first half
This year, it was Foster Griffin, one of the best stories in baseball who had been an All-Star and the best pitcher on the Nationals in the first half, who was in the midst of a breakout season in his second stint in the MLB. It was also Luis Garcia Jr., who smashed 20+ long balls and 70-plus RBI while hitting for a great average and providing positional flexibility for the Nats' infield. As a former top prospect and homegrown talent, he was a perfect example of the new front office being able to maximize talent that was already in the organization.
Also in the past, it has been Max Scherzer, Trea Turner, and of course, Juan Soto (whose trade to the Padres resulted in James Wood and CJ Abrams coming to the District and who are detrimental to the team's success in the future). Also in the Soto trade, the Nationals acquired MacKenzie Gore, who was flipped to the Texas Rangers this offseason, for a huge haul of now top-rated prospects for the Nationals.
The Nats did win the Juan Soto trade by a long shot, even though Soto is a great player. But at what point do we see the Nationals keep their stars, and they have the potential to become lifelong Nationals (except maybe playing in another team's farm system)
At what point do the Nationals decide that they want to win? That the team wants to keep their key players, because without key players, fans would not want to go to games, they would lose interest in spending their money for the team's ownership to pocket the money and not put their money towards a great on field product?
I have no idea, but if the Nationals want to win, which the team's fans so desperately deserve after missing every postseason since winning the 2019 World Series, the Nationals must keep their stars. I cannot wait for the day the Nationals decide to be buyers at the trade deadline.
